Tutorial: Samurai Sketching with Ink

In this tutorial I will demonstrate my technique and the materials I use to create an ink samurai painting. For this particular tutorial I have specifically chosen cheap, budget-friendly materials that anyone can use.

Part 1: Beginning with a loose pencil sketch I describe my process and approach to developing simple anatomy using basic forms as well as lighting and shadow through hatching halftone patterns. I use a previous, original sketch as reference.

Part 2: When inking I explain the importance of brush direction as well as my thought process on how I design my characters. I also explain how I apply a water wash to further accent halftone areas and create visual interest. I use gold ink and a brush to complete the rising sun background.

This HD video tutorial is just under 2 hours long. You can watch me in real-time as I sketch, draw and ink with full narration. My goal is to offer some insights on my work and help others to develop their skills through practice and my own personal experience.
